So what, exactly, is a GUTSHOT STRAIGHT? Two things. One, it's a poker hand that is usually a pretty reckless gamble. Two, it's a novel published in January by William Morrow that's not about poker but does feature characters who do quite a bit of reckless gambling. I’m hoping reviewers will characterize it as “crackling with romantic and criminal intrigue,” “funny as hell,” and “Elmore Leonard meets Flannery O’Connor...in a bar, late at night, on the Caribbean coast, jukebox cranking out vintage Pretenders, and the Coen Brothers at the next table over, knocking back ice-cold Belikins and playing Seven Card Hi-Lo for bottlecaps with a couple of off-duty exotic dancers, one of whom has a PhD in early-medieval history.” Or something like that.
All hyperbole aside, GUTSHOT STRAIGHT is full of profound, life-changing life lessons (e.g., “If you rip off a murderous 400-pound Vegas gangster, leave the country. ASAP.”). Most importantly, though, it’s a fun, fast, entertaining read, just the thing for a cold, bleak, winter afternoon. Or a hot, sunny day at the beach. Either way!
Have a look around. There’s a description of GUTSHOT STRAIGHT, an excerpt, a blog full of profound, life-changing life lessons, cool free stuff, a Q&A that gives more info about the title, and more more more. And I’d love to hear from you, so if you have a second, drop me a line.
